'My first relationship was with a chick'

Miley Cyrus reveals how she wrestled with her gender identity before coming out as pansexual

She's currently dating Australian actor Liam Hemsworth.

But Miley Cyrus has revealed that the first romantic relationship she ever had was with a girl.

The actress and singer, 23, who is currently a coach on The Voice, told Variety that, 'My whole life, I didn't understand my own gender and my own sexuality.'

Miley, who was cast as the lead in Disney's Hannah Montana show when was 11, said that it was about that time that she started to really explore her sexuality.

'My eyes started opening in the fifth or sixth grade. My first relationship in my life was with a chick,' she told the trade publication.

'I always hated the word 'bisexual,' because that's even putting me in a box. I don't ever think about someone being a boy or someone being a girl.'

She was finally able to put a 'label' on herself, she said, after visiting a LGBTQ center in Los Angeles.

'I saw one human in particular who didn't identify as male or female,' she recounted. 'Looking at them, they were both: beautiful and sexy and tough but vulnerable and feminine but masculine. And I related to that person more than I related to anyone in my life.'

The Wrecking Ball singer now has a charitable foundation called Happy Hippie that's committed to helping homeless and at-risk LGBTQ youth.
