A MUM who ate a banana while waiting in a traffic jam was fined £145 and given three points on her licence for careless driving.
Elsa Harris, 45, was stationary in her Volkswagen car when she took her hands off the wheel to peel the banana.
A policeman confronted Elsa and claimed she did not have control of the car because both hands were off the wheel.
The motorist refused to pay an on-the-spot fine of £100 and her case was forwarded on to a magistrates' court in Weymouth, Dorset.
Her solicitor advised her she would not win the case, so she begrudgingly pleaded guilty to a charge of driving without due care and attention.
The criminal offence is commonly handed out to drivers for hitting pedestrians or causing a collision.
The conviction has had a significant impact on Elsa's insurance premium which has since risen by 40 per cent.
