According to torrent engine TorrentFreak, the album has been downloaded illegally over half a million times since it’s release.
The album was released exclusively on streaming website Tidal, with many people not keen on paying the website’s expensive monthly subscription fee.
Even those who have Tidal accounts have encountered difficulty, and Kanye’s announcement that the album would not be going on sale will only increase the number of illegal downloads.
“My album will never never never be on Apple. And it will never be for sale… You can only get it on Tidal,” the eccentric rapper had posted on his Twitter account.
“Generally we don’t track music releases closely, so I’m not calling any records,” a Torrent Freak staff told BBC. “However, I haven’t seen numbers this high before for a music release – not with Adele either.”
