Out campaigners argue new countries joining the EU is "dangerous" but Remain supporters insist the UK could block future members.
David Cameron has branded claims by one of his own ministers that the UK would not have a veto on Turkey joining the EU as "misleading" and "absolutely wrong".
The Prime Minister's slapdown came after Brexit campaigner and Armed Forces Minister Penny Mordaunt warned gangsters, murderers and terrorists from countries like Turkey and Albania would come to Britain if it stays in the bloc.
Turkish membership would also put maternity services under major pressure, costing the NHS £400m over a decade, she claimed.
She insisted Turkey was set to join the EU in the next eight years and the UK would be unable to block the move.
But this was dismissed by Remain supporters.
