The body confirmed that a sample analyzed from Cape Verde contained the virus, which causes a serious birth defect called microcephaly, as well as other severe fetal brain defects.
The disease was originally discovered in Brazil, South America, and WHO Africa Director, Matshidiso Moeti, said the result of the Cape Varde sample was disturbing because it showed that disease was spreading now and was on the verge of becoming an African problem.
Moeti added that the increased awareness would allow African teams prepare better for the disease if it crossed shores, but that it wasn’t necessary for travel restrictions,
