EMERGENCY crews were flooded with calls in Siberia after a mushroom cloud led locals to fear a deadly nuclear explosion.
The spooky cloud formation caused total panic in the city of Kemerovo with people fearing doomsday had finally arrived.
But Russian locals had nothing to worry about as the ‘mushroom cloud‘ was nothing more than an eerie cloud formation.
“A massive anvil cumulo-nimbus thunderstorm cloud over Siberia left residents wondering if somebody dropped a nuclear bomb,” reported Sputnik news agency.
“Local emergency services report receiving a high volume of calls by petrified town residents fearing that the end of days was upon them.”
People had been concerned “a nuclear blast or an explosion at one of the coal mines in the Kuzbass region’, said the report.
But meteorological officials insisted it was a natural phenomenon – an anvil-shaped cloud – associated with a strong thunderstorm.
Locals including Sergey Zmaznev recorded images and footage of the extraordinary cloud formation.
Some tried “joking” about nuclear war on social media.
But one user say the cloud as a sign from the gods that it was the perfect time to pick mushrooms – a favourite Russian activity at this time of year.
“A mushroom cloud has grown today so this is probably a hint that the ‘mushroom season’ is in full swing. It is time to pick mushrooms. So beautiful!”
