Ryan Lochte has apologized for lying about getting robbed in Rio but he’s still not off the hook! The U.S. Olympic Committee says Ryan and the other swimmers involved in this scandal could still be severely punished!
“The behavior of these athletes is not acceptable, nor does it represent the values of Team USA or the conduct of the vast majority of its members,” the U.S. Olympic Committee said in a statement released on Aug. 19, per ABC News. “We will further review the matter, and any potential consequences for the athletes, when we return to the United States.
“On behalf of the United States Olympic Committee,” the statement added, “we apologize to our hosts in Rio and the people of Brazil for this distracting ordeal in the midst of what should rightly be a celebration of excellence.”
Uh-oh. As if getting charged with false reporting of a crime wasn’t bad enough, it seems that even Team USA might deliver a disciplinary smackdown on the swimming star. His fellow teammate (and literally partner in this crime) Jimmy Feigen, 26, was also indicted on this fake robbery scandal. Yet, Jimmy settled with the Brazilian authorities by paying close to 11k to charity. It seems that even after that donation, he, Ryan, Gunnar Bentz, 20, and Jack Conger, 21, will still suffer the consequences for vandalizing a Brazilian gas station bathroom.
Ryan didn’t offer to write a check when he finally apologized. Instead, he said he should have been “more careful and candid” with his words. He did “accept responsibility” for his actions, saying he learned his lesson. He still has that pending charge hanging over his head, though.
Whatever the USOC does to Ryan may pale in comparison to the hit his wallet is going to take. This scandal is likely going to be a “grenade-like-effect on his bank account,” Eric Schiffer, the CEO of Reputation Management Consultants, EXCLUSIVELY tells HollywoodLife. After this Rio robbery lying scandal, Ryan could lose more than a million dollars in endorsements. Yikes!
So, on top of a punishment from the U.S. Olympics organization and a possible criminal charge in Brazil, Ryan could be out of a ton of money? Maybe Ryan really did learn a lesson about lying?
