Colchester dog attack: Baby boy mauled to death and brother seriously injured in house

A four-month-old boy has died and his 22-month-old brother has life-changing injuries after they and their mother were attacked by a dog.

The younger boy was left fighting for his life after the horror attack occurred in Colchester, Essex, around 3:10pm on Thursday, but was later pronounced dead.

The older brother suffered serious injuries and was receiving treatment at a specialist unit in hospital.

The boys' mother was treated for minor injuries in hospital after she was bitten by the dog - said by neighbours to be a Staffordshire bull terrier-type.

Essex Police seized the dog and confirmed it has been put down with consent of the owner. No arrests have been made.

Police and paramedics found the brothers suffering from bite injuries when they were called to a house in Harwich Road.

Chief Inspector Elliot Judge said: "This is a tragic incident that Essex Police is investigating.

"Specially trained officers are providing support to the family at this difficult time."

The incident has left people in the neighbourhood feeling shocked and upset.

As concerned neighbours gathered at the scene, Scott Mills, 24, said: "When we heard that a baby had died, everyone was very upset. It's dreadful and so tragic.

"There were a lot of children about because of the time - a lot of children were coming home from school."
