UK weather: Storm Angus set to batter Britain with 80-90mph winds and heavy rain as winter finally arrives

The Met Office has issued a warning that Storm Angus will batter Britain overnight with 80-90mph winds - as winter finally arrives in the UK.

The storm - whose name heralds the start of a 'new alphabet' - is expected to bring some very strong gusts to coastal counties of southeast England in the morning.

The Met Office upgraded its warning this morning to say that people should be prepared for disruption to travel, power cuts and "some damage to buildings".

The warning comes as a "polar air mass" continues to sweep the country - bringing snow, hail and thunder.

And Flood Warnings have been issued - warning immediate action is required - for Lyme Regis and West Bay Harbours in the southwest tomorrow morning when water is expected to come over sea walls.

The areas which are expected to be hit hardest by Storm Angus are: West Sussex, Kent, Brighton and Hove, East Sussex and Isle of Wight.

Southeastern Railways has already warned it is not expecting to run trains on most routes before 10am tomorrow - to clear fallen trees and other debris from tracks.

The Environment Agency already had 'Flood Alerts' in operation across the northeast and northwest - with Bridlington and the Upper Derwent from Seathwaite to Derwent Water among those areas expected to face problems.

There are also warnings that the storm could start brewing around the Isle of Wight area as early as Saturday night.
