Brian Cox leaves fans in hysterics as he is left baffled on The One Show over Rylan Clark-Neal

The professor of particle physics is considered to be an actual genius. 

But Brian Cox was left well and truly baffled during his appearance on BBC's The One Show on Tuesday, when asked about Celebrity Big Brother host Rylan Clark-Neal. 

The British physicist, 50, was quizzed over which celebrities he would consider going head-to-head with in a boxing match, but was left completely stumped when Rylan's name was thrown into the ring. 

Host Amol Rajan had kicked off the amusing conversation, as he came up with the idea of 'Box with Cox' following Brian's admission that he has turned to the fighting sport to keep fit.

Amol asked him: 'Who would you like to take on in a celebrity boxing match?'

Laughing, Brian replied: 'There are quite a few current political leaders I'd love to just have a pop at,' before quickly adding: 'From around the world, not just in the UK.'

Alex Jones was then quick to name-drop a few famous faces including comedian Dara Ó Briain. She tells the professor: 'You could have him,' before asking: 'But what about Brian Cox versus Ryland?'

The mention of Rylan names takes Brian - who has appeared on This Morning on which Rylan has been a part of the team for five years - by surprise and he's left looking rather puzzled at the mention of the TV personality. He replies: Versus?... I don't know who he is.'

Brian's reply seemed to leave the studio audience rather amused and many viewers at home were quick to comment on the hilarious mishap on Twitter. 

Taking to the social media platform, they penned: 'Rylan? I don’t know who that is, brilliant, love it!
