Elegant Mrs Trump takes inspiration from the princess's crisp navy and white ensembles

Melania Trump appeared to be paying tribute to Princess Diana's timeless style as she joined the President at Buckingham Palace this afternoon.

The First Lady, 49, chose an ensemble in one of the late royal's favourite colour combinations - white and navy - for the engagement at Buckingham Palace.

The custom white Dolce & Gabbana dress featured a contrasting blue collar and flattering waist belt while her white Hervé Pierre hat was complete with a thick navy band around the brim. She finished the look with a pair of matching heels by Manolo Blahnik.

The crisp, tailored ensemble is reminiscent of several looks worn by Diana, including two white and navy skirt suits worn to public engagements throughout the 1980s and early 1990s.

Other royal watchers noted Mrs Trump might have turned to the silver screen for her inspiration, with comparisons to Audrey Hepburn's Eliza Doolitle from My Fair Lady and Titanic's Rose (Kate Winslet) both cropping up online.

The outfit was Mrs Trump's third in 24 hours and her second today, after she arrived in London wearing a Burberry blouse and Michael Kors skirt suit.

The Presidential couple are currently enjoying lunch with the Queen at Buckingham Palace, following a welcome to mark the official start of their three-day State Visit.

President and Mrs Trump were greeted outside the palace by Her Majesty, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

President Trump's daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner watched the arrival from the palace balcony.

In an apparently pre-planned move, Ivanka, 37, complemented Mrs Trump's outfit in a white blazer and pleated skirt by royal-approved label Alessandra Rich.

The Duchess of Cornwall also plumped for white, wearing a classic knee-length shift dress with a beautiful hat, cream gloves and purse.

The royal tour already looks set to be a fashion show for Mrs Trump, who has sported three different looks in the last 24 hours.

The First Lady left the Andrews Air Force Base, in Maryland, on Sunday evening in a £3,480 ($4,400) Gucci shirt dress.
