Frank Lampard got a taste of defeat for the first time as Chelsea manager following Friday's pre-season friendly in Yokohama.
Mason Mount looked good in spells, as did Jorginho, but the Blues look worryingly goal-shy now Eden Hazard has left for Real Madrid.
Here, Sportsmail looks at five things we learned from Chelsea 0-1 Kawasaki Frontale.
Life after Hazard looks tough in front of goal
There were no shortage of goals last time out when Chelsea celebrated scoring four against St Patrick's in Dublin but here in Yokohama, the worrying absence of threat and creativity in attack was in evidence long before the late winner was conceded.
Who will shoulder the burden of goals and assists now Eden Hazard is gone? That is the big question going into Frank Lampard's first season at the helm and it was not answered with any satisfaction against J-League champions Kawasaki Frontale.
Substitute right back Davide Zappacosta musterd the first effort on goal from an impossibly tight angle before Olivier Giroud worked the 'keeper with a free-kick and a header.
There was a promising cameo by Christian Pulisic on debut. Pulisic showed his pace and ability to go past defenders in the open spaces out wide. Lampard will hope he can work some of his magic nearer the opposition goal as he settles into the side.
These results count for nothing but there was little encouragement in this department for the new boss.
