New Chief of Staff: Bamgbose commends Buhari for not appointing El-Rufai, Kingibe

A senior lawyer and National Coordinator, Concerned Advocates for Good Governance, CAGG, Barrister Olusegun Bamgbose, Esq, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for heeding his earlier advice not to appoint Babagana Kingibe or Nasir El-Rufai as his new Chief of Staff.

Following the death of Mallam Abba Kyari, Bamgbose had given Buhari tips on who to appoint as the replacement for his late Chief of Staff.

He had noted that the current Kaduna State Governor, Mallam El Rufai and Babagana Kingibe do not fit into who the President should consider.

The senior lawyer further explained that while El Rufai is still serving as Governor, “Kingibe can’t be trusted. He does not have a good track record as a politician,” he had said.

The Presidency on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Ibrahim Gambari as Abba Kyari’s replacement and Bamgbose believes the President had made the right choice.

“One cannot but hail President Buhari for appointing Professor Ibrahim Gambari as the new Chief of Staff. This is commendable,” he said in a statement to DAILY POST on Wednesday.

“At this crucial period, President Buhari won’t need a core politician to replace late Abba Kyari.

“It should be noted that certain tips were given in considering the most suitable person to occupy such a position.

“The PRESIDENCY possibly considered this. I specifically declared Babagana Kingibe and El Rufai unfit to be appointed Chief of Staff.

“We are happy that none of them was considered as Kingibe was dropped. We equally advised that the President be given exclusive right to choose himself and that the power brokers should avail him that privilege. It happened.

“The new Chief of Staff was Buhari’s External Affairs Minister as far back as 1984.

“We suggested that the new Chief of Staff be relatively old. The new Chief of Staff is 75.

“We furthermore advised the President to choose someone he has been associating with for not less than 25 years, Ibrahim has known Buhari for more than 35 years.

“He is a good choice. We congratulate him and will expect him to hit the ground running.”
