Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has addressed the controversy surrounding his recent comments about Peter Obi needing clearance before visiting the state, stating that the concern was purely about security protocols and not politically motivated.
This clarification was made in a statement issued on Sunday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua. Governor Okpebholo, who serves as the Chief Security Officer of the state, said it is his constitutional duty to protect lives and property, especially during visits by high-profile individuals.
He made the initial comments after a defection rally in Uromi, where he cautioned that Obi must make proper security arrangements before coming to Edo.
The statement noted that ignoring established security procedures exposes both the visitor and residents to avoidable risks. “We expect leaders, no matter how highly placed, to align with the protocols and security realities of the areas they visit,” it read.
Citing recent cases of kidnapping and attacks on religious leaders in the state, the governor defended the enforcement of such measures. Okpebholo drew from the Bible to support his stance, quoting Matthew 6:2-4, which encourages humility and discretion when giving to others. “When you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets… your giving may be in secret.”
“Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you,” he quoted, adding that the wisdom in the verse is relevant in today’s security context. He also criticised those attempting to politicise the issue, insisting that the security of lives cannot be compromised for political gain.
“We will not fold our arms while politically motivated actions endanger lives,” the statement read. Okpebholo reaffirmed his commitment to restoring peace and order in the state, noting that the protocols are signs of responsible leadership rather than signs of hostility. “We’re working tirelessly on the insecurity we inherited.
These protocols demonstrate responsible governance, not hostility,” he said. While maintaining that he respects Peter Obi and other political stakeholders, Governor Okpebholo emphasised the need to follow proper channels.
“The governor respects Mr Peter Obi and all political figures contributing to Nigeria’s democracy.” “However, respect for official procedure must remain a constant,” the statement concluded.
