EXCLUSIVE: Nigerian Police Detain Woman With One-Month-Old Baby In Suleja Prison Since March Over Participation In Shiites' Protest

SaharaReporters gathered that Jamila Ibrahim, a nursing mother, and her one-month-old baby were arrested by the Nigerian police during a protest allegedly linked to the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also known as the Shiites movement.

The incident occurred on March 28 at the Wuse Market in Abuja, where Jamila was picked up while carrying her baby. The procession, which started peacefully, was violently disrupted by security forces using live ammunition.

According to a family source, Jamila was not a member of the Shiites group but had joined the protest voluntarily. She has reportedly remained in custody without trial or formal charges since her arrest.

“She was taken to the station without informing her husband or her family. Then she was transferred to the prison, and as I speak to you, she is still at Suleja prison with her baby,” the source said.

A member of the Shiites movement confirmed the incident and identified Jamila as the arrested nursing mother. The group has reached out for help, seeking her release.

The Islamic Movement had earlier accused the Nigerian Army's Guard Brigade of attacking their Quds Day procession, leaving several protesters dead and many injured. They described the incident as a deliberate attack on unarmed civilians expressing solidarity with Palestine.

The group also accused soldiers of desecrating Islamic and cultural values, beating women and children, and removing their hijabs within the premises of a mosque.

The Islamic Movement linked the attack to a leaked letter from the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), which instructed security forces to take "necessary action" against the procession.

They highlighted contradictions within the Nigerian government regarding its stance on Palestine and demanded accountability for the attack.

The group confirmed that 380 protesters, including women and children, had been arrested and detained, and named four protesters who were killed during the incident.
