Energy companies were today asked to urgently produce more power - but what would happen if the lights went out?

The National Grid said its request did not mean there was an immediate risk of blackouts, but it is the first time such a notice has been issued for three years.

The Government is working on a contingency plan if a five-day nationwide power blackout were to happen, it has been claimed.

According to documents seen by Private Eye magazine, no landline phones would be available to any homes or businesses - potentially cutting off elderly people in their homes.
Mobile phones could only be used to make calls and not for data such as accessing the web, apps or emails.
