Nick Blackwell out of #coma one week after brutal title fight with Chris Eubank Junior

Doctors reduced the boxer's sedatives and he was able to chat with family members after regaining consciousness on Saturday

Nick Blackwell has woken from his coma and is speaking to friends and family at his hospital bedside.

Doctors treating Blackwell at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington brought him out of his medically-induced coma on Saturday and he regained consciousness on Sunday.

The former British middleweight champion was able to chat to his delighted friends and family at his bedside.

Blackwell was placed in a coma after he suffered a bleed on his brain following his 10-round defeat to Chris Eubank Junior at Wembley's SSE Arena on March 26.

Doctors felt they did not need to operate because the bleed was not serious and gradually reduced his sedatives over the weekend to bring him round.

In a statement, his promoter Hennessy Sports, said: It read: “On Saturday Nick woke from an induced coma. Twenty-four hours later, on Sunday, he was talking to family and close friends at his bedside.

“He was in an induced coma for almost seven days and given the very best possible treatment by the incredible team at St. Mary’s.

“The sedatives used were gradually reduced over this period of time and finally, at the weekend, Nick woke from this induced coma.

“He acknowledged the voices of loved ones and, by Sunday, was starting to talk. It was the outcome everyone had been hoping and praying for; Nick had won his toughest fight yet.

“On behalf of Nick, his family, and very close friends, we'd like to thank everyone for their continued support and well-wishes. It has been overwhelming at times and has certainly not gone unnoticed.

“Nick won the hearts of over three million (television) viewers with an astonishing display of all-action bravery and determination. In the past week, however, he has humbled millions more. He's a fighter. He's a warrior. He's a true champion and gentleman.”

Doctors are hopeful Blackwell can go on to make a full recovery, although his boxing career is over.
