.... When is Donald Trump’s inauguration as President? What happens on the day?
DONALD Trump has pledged to be the president to ‘Make America Great Again’ and now he’s got the chance to back up his words
But when can he start work on the controversial policies which have divided a nation straight down the middle?
The Republican nominee has achieved one of the most improbable political victories in modern US history – despite a series of controversies that would easily have destroyed other candidacies.
Today he pledged to unite America after his shock election as president after the most divisive campaign in US political history.
“Now it’s time for America to bind the wounds of division…I say it is time for us to come together as one united people,” he said, as supporters chanted “USA! USA! USA!”.
“I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be President for all Americans and this is so important to me.”
Now the tough work starts – turning the rhetoric into workable and affordable policies.
When is Trump’s inauguration?
Donald Trump‘s next big day is scheduled for Friday, January 20 2017 when he will be sworn in on the steps of the US Capitol at noon.
The new 45th President of the United States will then officially take over from the current President Barack Obama.
Presidents have been inaugurated on Jan. 20 since Franklin D. Roosevelt took the oath of office in 1937, moving up from the previous day of March 4.
The swearing-in is just one of the day’s activities.
Traditionally, presidents have started the day with a morning worship service.
Then the president and president-elect traditionally travel together to the inauguration.
The Vice President – in this case Indiana Governor Mike Pence – will be sworn in first. Then it will be Trump’s turn.
He will take the traditional oath: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
Until then Trump takes on the title of President-Elect.
When the votes of the Electoral College, cast in December, are counted in early January, Obama will become known as the ‘lame duck’.
What happens on Inauguration Day?
President Obama will have five things to do on the day before handing over to Trump.
Issue pardons. One of the most controversial pardons was issued by President Gerald Ford TO predecessor Richard Nixon – who had just stepped down after the Watergate scandal.
Welcome the Incoming President George and Laura Bush hosted the Obamas for coffee at the White House before the ceremony.
Leave a note for the new President Bush’s note to Obama wished the new leader well on the “fabulous new chapter” he was about to begin.
