UK weather: 'Thundersnow' sparks travel chaos as Britain wakes up to winter showers and icy roads - Mirror

Commuters are facing travel chaos across parts of Britain that are being walloped by wintry weather, including icy roads, snow and sleet.

Ice, thundersnow and heavy rain have wreaked havoc in north-west England, northern Scotland and Northern Ireland, prompting weather warnings from the Met Office and alerts for drivers.

An ice warning was issued for a large area - from parts of the East and West Midlands in England up to the Scottish Highlands - as temperatures plunged overnight and froze rain-slicked surfaces.

Britons who are struggling to get to work or school in hazardous icy conditions, snow or winter showers this morning will see more wintry weather today and tonight.

Commuters were facing a slower and dangerous trek to work or school as snow, sleet or rain - combined with temperatures below the freezing mark - made driving difficult, with roads covered in ice or snow and visiblity limited.

Buses were delayed and poor rail conditions meant that some Northern train services were not stopping at stations between Liverpool and Manchester.

There was so much snow in some places that drivers were getting stuck and calling for help.

Motorists were struggling to get over the tops at Snake Pass in the Derbyshire section of the Peak District, where a car flipped onto its roof.

There were a number of reports of cars "spinning on ice" or overturning, and a number of collisions were reported as gritters worked throughout the night.

Pedestrians faced hazardous conditions on pavements that were coated in ice or snow.
