Nigerians may face nationwide power outages in the coming days after the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) declared an indefinite strike on Wednesday.
The union said the action became necessary due to the non-implementation of the national minimum wage, the casualisation of workers, and several unresolved welfare and operational issues.
In a notice signed by Acting General Secretary Dominic Igwebike, NUEE explained that the strike followed the expiration of an ultimatum earlier issued to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
“It is unfortunate that the TCN Management has decided to handle these issues with kid gloves and a lack of regard for the hard-working staff of TCN,” the notice read.
“We cannot continue to fold our arms while our rights are being violated and the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) goes down the drain. To this end, the Union is compelled to withdraw its services.”
The union listed the grievances fueling the strike to include:
-
Non-implementation of the National Minimum Wage
-
Casualisation of workers
-
Non-provision of tools and materials
-
Non-payment of staff salaries since April 2025
-
Lack of operational vehicles
-
Non-provision of PPEs since 2021
-
Unresolved issues from the unbundling of TCN
-
Non-payment of retirement benefits
NUEE directed its members nationwide to fully comply with the strike directive “until such a time that the management is ready to discharge its obligations towards the workforce.”
The union had previously embarked on a strike in June 2024, which disrupted power supply across the country.
As of press time, the spokesperson of TCN, Ndidi Mbah, had not responded to enquiries from News360 Nigeria.
