Chaos In Kinshasa As DR Congo Fans Riot After Senegal Defeat (Photos/Video)

Supporters of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) erupted in chaos at Kinshasa’s Stade des Martyrs after their team suffered a dramatic 3-2 loss to Senegal in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

The Congolese side had thrilled their 80,000-capacity home crowd early on, racing to a 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to goals from Cédric Bakambu and Yoane Wissa. But the celebration was short-lived. Senegal mounted a spirited second-half comeback, with Pape Gueye, Nicolas Jackson, and Pape Matar Sarr all finding the net to turn the game around and hand the Teranga Lions a stunning victory.

The defeat dealt a heavy blow to DR Congo’s qualification hopes. The frustration quickly spilled over into violence as angry fans tore out stadium seats, hurled them onto the pitch, and vandalized parts of the facility. Police had to step in to restore order and prevent further damage.

This incident adds to a worrying trend of fan unrest that has marred several African qualifiers this year. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is now weighing possible disciplinary measures against DR Congo.

Senegal’s win carried major implications for Group B standings. With the three points, they moved to the top of the table with 18 points, leaving DR Congo in second place on 16. The Congolese must now fight to win their remaining fixtures and hope to qualify either by reclaiming first place or securing one of the best runners-up spots for a playoff berth.
