El-Rufai storm Church gathering in Imo, campaigns for voter registration (Video)

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has launched a campaign to encourage Nigerians to participate in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise nationwide.

Speaking during a church service in Imo State, El-Rufai stressed the importance of voter registration in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process. He urged women to play a leading role in mobilising their families and communities, particularly young people, to register.

“The governance of our country today is democratic—we elect our leaders, we don’t select them, we don’t appoint them,” El-Rufai said. “So, voting is important.

Registering to vote is a civic duty, not a political imperative.”

A member of the African Democratic Party (ADC), El-Rufai expressed concern over low registration numbers in some regions, particularly the Southeast, warning that poor turnout could weaken citizens’ voices in future elections.

Appealing directly to women, he said:

“I want to appeal to you, our mothers, our sisters, and our daughters, to please get our children who are 16 years and above—who will be 18 years by 2027 and ready to vote—to go out and register. It is very, very important.”

The former governor emphasised that meaningful governance and accountability in Nigeria depend on citizens’ active participation in the electoral process. He described voting not only as a right but also as a responsibility that shapes the nation’s leadership and future.

His remarks come as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) continues the CVR exercise ahead of the 2027 general elections, with calls from political leaders and civil society groups for more Nigerians, especially youths, to take part.
