At least 12 passengers were abducted on Thursday afternoon when gunmen attacked a ferry traveling from Calabar, Cross River State, to Oron in Akwa Ibom State.
Among those on board were the Public Relations Officer of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, DSP Timfon John, and a former Cross River governorship candidate under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Eyo Ekpo Esq.
A survivor recounted the ordeal: “They stopped our vessel, boarded it, and when their boat was full, they took off,” adding that a family member was also among those kidnapped.
The boat’s captain, employed by a licensed ferry service, reportedly attempted to outmaneuver the attackers, damaging one of the boat’s two engines in the process before retreating to Calabar.
Upon arrival at the Inland Waterways Jetty, passengers were questioned by police, their statements recorded, and later released.
Efforts to obtain official comments from the Police Commands in both Cross River and Akwa Ibom States are still ongoing.
