Nigerian Police Release TikToker Abubakar Arrested Over Defamation Allegations Against Senator Shehu Buba

His release, sources said, came after the intervention of pro-democracy activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.

The Nigeria Police Force has released a TikTok content creator, Ishaq Abubakar Major, who was arrested in Abuja over allegations of defaming Senator Shehu Buba, the lawmaker representing Bauchi South Senatorial District.

SaharaReporters confirmed on Thursday evening that Major regained his freedom after spending days in police custody at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) headquarters in Abuja.

His release, sources said, came after the intervention of pro-democracy activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore.

“Ishaq Abubakar Major has been released this evening by the police. This was after the intervention of Mr Omoyele Sowore,” a close associate told SaharaReporters.

Major had been picked up last Saturday at the Maraba-Nyanya junction in Abuja by FCID operatives following a series of viral TikTok videos in which he accused Senator Buba of having ties with bandit groups terrorising the North.

In one of the clips sighted by SaharaReporters, Major directly referenced a past report by this platform detailing the senator’s alleged connections to bandit kingpins and controversial religious activities.

“This newspaper (SaharaReporters) described Senator Buba as a senator that has a relationship with bandits,” Major said. “There is no newspaper that would publish false allegations against him without taking them to court, because he has the money to do so, and he also has ambition of governorship. But because he knows the allegations are not false, that is why he has not gone to court.”

SaharaReporters had in August reported that Senator Buba, Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, was facing mounting criticism over multiple scandals.

These include an alleged peace pact with wanted terror kingpin Bello Turji, accusations of fueling sectarian tensions in Jos, and outrage over demolishing a church to fund the construction of a new mosque linked to the Izala sect.

The deal, reportedly facilitated through Kaduna-based cleric Sheikh Musa Asadus-Sunnah, has been widely condemned by Muslim clerics who argue that Turji should face justice rather than be pardoned.

Prominent northern preacher, Sheikh Murtala Asadah, has publicly opposed the peace initiative, accusing the government of ethnic bias and warning that the move could cost President Bola Tinubu political support in the North ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Constituents in Bauchi South also criticised the senator for prioritising the Jos mosque project while leaving an unfinished mosque in his home constituency of Toro.
