A 27-year-old UK-based Nigerian, Daniel Odubanjo, has been sentenced to six years in prison after being convicted of false imprisonment and two counts of segxwal assault on a train. The attacks occurred minutes apart and targeted a young woman and a teenage girl.
The incident took place on November 29, 2024, aboard a Shenfield-to-Chelmsford train. Odubanjo, from King Avenue in Clapham, first cornered a 21-year-old woman in a train toilet. According to reports, he forced her back into the cubicle, grabbed her wrists, and segxwally assaulted her. The victim managed to escape temporarily, but Odubanjo continued the assault until she falsely claimed to be 14, prompting him to release her. The woman immediately reported the attack to British Transport Police (BTP) after alighting at Chelmsford station.
Shortly afterwards, Odubanjo targeted a 17-year-old girl boarding the same service. He exposed himself and verbally harassed the teenager before assaulting her. Intervention from a nearby passenger prevented further harm. Officers detained Odubanjo at Hatfield Peverel station following the incidents.
Chelmsford Crown Court convicted him on charges of false imprisonment and two counts of segxwal assault. In addition to his six-year prison sentence, Odubanjo was ordered to pay a victim surcharge and was issued a segxwal Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which bars him from being intoxicated while using public transport, stations, or Network Rail premises.
