Nigeria secured a place in the semi-finals of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after recording a convincing 2–0 victory over Algeria in Saturday night’s quarter-final encounter.
The Super Eagles, under the guidance of coach Eric Chelle, controlled large spells of the first half but were frustrated by Algeria’s defence and failed to find the breakthrough before the interval. Nigeria came closest in the opening 45 minutes when Calvin Bassey’s goal-bound effort was dramatically cleared off the line.
The deadlock was eventually broken after the restart when Victor Osimhen rose highest to head home a well-delivered cross from Bruno Onyemaechi, giving Nigeria a deserved lead. Osimhen later turned creator, providing the assist for Akor Adams, who doubled the advantage and effectively sealed the contest.
With the win, the three-time African champions advance to the semi-finals, where they will face tournament hosts Morocco, as Nigeria continue their push for a return to the AFCON final.
