One person is dead and at least 12 others are injured after a double-decker bus and a truck collided in Scotland.

Several victims are thought to be critically wounded following the horror crash on the A78 in Ardrossan, North Ayrshire, at around 2.10pm.

Witnesses described how the front of the bus was 'torn apart' in the collision, which is being treated as a 'major incident' by the Scottish Ambulance Service.

One Facebook user wrote: "[I am] just back from trying to get to Saltcoats. The crash is horrendous, people getting took off bus, couldn't see the car, but bus front is ripped apart.

"We were right behind it but did not see it happen. The cars in front of us just went past, we stopped the cars going any further."

One person was pronounced dead at the scene and 12 others were left injured, Police Scotland confirmed this evening.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman added that several of the casualties 'are in a critical condition'.

The victims have been taken to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock and the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, STV reports.

Two air ambulances were among the emergency crews to attend the scene following the collision near the Rowan Tree restaurant.

They were joined by specialist trauma teams and six fire units, who had to cut at least one person from the wreckage.

The identities and ages of the victims are unknown at this time.
