Chris Rock shakes the Oscars Though host Chris Rock may have chosen to stay silent on the #OscarsSoWhite controversy in the days leading up to the the 88th annual Academy Awards, he held nothing back on the Dolby stage on Sunday night. Rock’s opening monologue at the 2016 Oscars was funny, edgy and it addressed Hollywood’s race problem without letting liberals off the hook.
Much attention has been paid to the fact that no persons of color were nominated for any Oscars this year, and Rock, as a black comedian was under some pressure to drop out as the host of the ceremony. Instead, he chose to address the controversy head on.
“Well I’m here at the Academy Awards. Otherwise known as the White People’s Choice Awards. You realize, if they nominated host, I wouldn’t even get this job! Y’all would be watching Neil Patrick Harris right now. But here’s the crazy thing. This is the wildest, craziest Oscars to ever host because we got all this controversy — no black nominees. And people are like.
“Chris, you should boycott! Chris, you should quit! You should quit.” In his opening monologue, Rock took aim at a slew of hot topics in Hollywood, including the lack of diversity among this year’s nominees and the numerous Hollywood stars, such as Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith, who called for a boycott of the Oscars. “Well here’s the real question.
The real question everybody wants to know in the world is: Is Hollywood racist? You’re damn right Hollywood’s racist, but not the racist that you’ve grown accustomed to. Hollywood is sorority racist. It’s like, “We like you Ronda, but your not a Kappa.” That’s how Hollywood is. What I’m trying to say is it’s not about boycotting anything — it’s just, we want opportunity.
We want the black actors to get the same opportunities as white actors — that’s it! You know…..” The implicit political message of Rock’s monologue was that racism still exists in Hollywood. Leonardo Di Caprio’s long struggle to an Oscar The news is out and the internet just can’t stop talking about it!
