Are you sure you're just friends? Rihanna can't contain her delight as she steps out after Drake surprises her with a billboard

Rumours that they are more than friends have been surrounding Rihanna and Drake for months.

And Drake did little to stop tongues from wagging on Friday when he surprised his ex-girlfriend with a very romantic gesture.

Rihanna shared a photo to Instagram which showed a billboard with the words: 'Congratulations to Rihanna from Drake and everyone at OVO.'

The 28-year-old, who previously dated Drake but has kept coy on rumours they're back together, added the caption 'when he extra', along with a heart and a trophy emoji. 

The Hotline Bling hit-maker, who founded record label OVO, was congratulating the Rihanna on this weekend's MTV Video Music Awards.

The singer will be receiving the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at Sunday's ceremony, and will also be performing.

Rihanna is currently on a break from her Anti World Tour, with just three shows left and taking place over the next three months.

The star, who was joined by Drake during several of her concerts to perform a raunchy rendition of Work, was spotted out in New York City on Friday.  

Wearing an off-the-shoulder Bengal-striped top with flared sleeves, the We Found Love singer affected a retro elegance as she walked down the pavement in SoHo.

Rihanna's sharp neckline only just stopped short of giving away a bit of cleavage, and she matched her light blue top with a ripped pair of jeans, which loosened below the knee before folding up at the hem.
