'I'll regret those explicit texts forever': Sadie Hartley's cheating partner sobs over lewd messages he sent to killer days before her murder but claims 'blokes' are saying, 'But for the Grace of God...'

Sadie Hartley's cheating partner sobbed today over sexts he sent to her killer days before her murder but said 'a lot of blokes' will think: 'But for the Grace of God go I'.

Ian Johnston, 57, said he would always regret sending explicit photos and messages to Sadie's killer Sarah Williams just before she hacked her to death on their Lancashire doorstep in January.

'Bunny boiler' Williams, who was jailed for a minimum of 30 years today, spent a year plotting the murder with friend Katrina Walsh, who was sentenced to 25 years.

But the former firefighter has said he too is a 'victim' and could never have known his obsessed former lover would kill Sadie in the hope of winning him back.

He said: 'If people feel that in some way that I've let them down and that I'm responsible by texting, I'm profoundly sorry for that and I'll regret it forever.

'And I never for one minute believed that a few chuck-away ridiculous texts could ever lead to such atrocious events and such unimaginable loss for not just me, I know that, for Sadie's family, her kids and our friends'.

Mr Johnston has not had contact with Sadie's family since her tragic death and will not benefit from his late partner's will. He only found out during the trial.

Naked photographs were sent between him and Williams on December 3, 4 and 5 and Christmas Day last year, before more explicit texts on January 4.

After more than a year planning the killing, Williams went to the front door of Ms Hartley's £500,000 home on January 14.

When her rival answered the door, Williams paralysed her with a 500,000 volt stun-gun before stabbing her 40 times with 'demonic savagery'.

Williams was ordered to serve a minimum 30-year life sentence. Walsh will spend at least 25 years behind bars.

Judge Mr Justice Turner said the women played a 'game of death' and branded the murder 'crime of barbarity and pure evil'.
