A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice over an alleged child abduction in Surrey.
The 26-year-old witness reported that a young boy had been bundled into the back of a black VW Transporter van in Redhill on Thursday afternoon.
Cops believed the white lad, thought to be aged six or seven, was “forced into a van against his will” on Redstone Hill – and an abandoned bike was found nearby.
It sparked a frantic four-day nationwide manhunt for the lad – despite no missing person report being filed that matched his description.
Senior cops initially said the witness had given a credible account of the boy being snatched near Redhill station.
But officers said they re-interviewed him and there was no evidence to back up his account.
Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Superintendent Pete Fulton, said: “The risk to life and safeguarding children are our first priorities when presented with a report like this which is why we took the course of action we did.
“Time was of the essence which is why we asked for help from the public and media to find out what happened as soon as we could.
“Reports of this nature are extremely rare and we are the sure the public understand that when information such as this is received we treat it extremely seriously and must do all we can to find out investigate what’s happened.
