BRITAIN will bask in spring-like temperatures this week as the big freeze of winter does a U-turn.
It will hit 14C (57F) in places as warm southern air pushes out last week’s biting polar winds.
The South will be the first to warm up with highs of 12C (54F) today while the North stays cooler at about 5C (41F).
By Wednesday many parts will hit 14C — well above the 4C average for this time of year — with northern regions slipping back into low single figures overnight.
But the warm weather will bring heavy rain and gale-force winds, with southern coastal regions most at risk.
A Met Office spokesman said: “The week will start off cold in the North.
“There is a south-westerly flow on Wednesday which could bring strong winds and rain, although there will be a marked temperature change.”
Despite the warmer outlook, the Met Office has predicted below-average temperatures in the final run-up to Christmas and the New Year, in contrast to the mild winters of recent years.
And some areas could have a white Christmas.
Exacta Weather’s James Madden said: “In terms of an actual flake of snow falling on Christmas Day there is no reason why we couldn’t see some snow falling in places, in particular in some eastern coastal flanks.”
