Luis Suarez admits he told his wife he 'collided' with Giorgio Chiellini after bite incident

Luis Suarez has admitted he was 'in denial' after biting Giorgio Chiellini while playing for Uruguay at the 2014 World Cup.

The Barcelona striker, then at Liverpool, hit the headlines all over the world for the shocking incident, which occurred during a group game against Italy in Natal, Brazil.

But, despite video evidence confirming the bite, Suarez has revealed he initially couldn't accept what had happened and even told his wife they had 'simply collided'.

Speaking on Fox Sports, he confessed: 'My wife asked me what happened and I told her we simply collided. I did not accept the reality, I was in denial, and that was a big mistake.'

Suarez got away without punishment during the match, but was later given a four-month football ban, including nine international fixtures.

During his time away from the pitch, the 32-year-old admits he sought professional help.

'I turned to psychologists and that really helped me to accept my mistakes and grow,' he said. 'I suffered a great deal during that period, for my wife, my children and my team-mates.

'I was treated inhumanely, though. I had signed for Barcelona and they didn't even give me a presentation to the media. I thought my career was over and I'd have to retire.'
