Manchester United have 'bid £45million' for Fiorentina central defender Nikola Milenkovic.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to bring in Harry Maguire for £75m but is looking at back-up options in case that deal cannot be made.
City are also interested in Maguire so the move for Milenkovic, according to reports in Italy via the Mirror, is as a secondary option.
The 6ft 5in defender has made 14 appearances for Serbia and joined Serie A side Fiorentina from Partizan Belgrade two years ago.
Milenkovic was a target for Juventus but they have since cooled their interest, making United front-runners to sign the 21-year-old.
United are currently in Australia preparing for their first pre-season friendly against Perth Glory on Saturday with working continuing behind the scenes to renovate the squad before the new campaign.
