Arsenal have completed the signing of Swedish international striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon in a £55 million deal, the club announced on Saturday. The transfer could rise to £64 million with performance-related bonuses, as Mikel Arteta aims to sharpen his attacking options ahead of the new season.
Gyokeres, 27, enjoyed a phenomenal campaign last season, scoring 39 goals to lead Sporting to the Portuguese league title and even netting a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City.
The striker joins on a five-year contract and becomes the Gunners’ sixth major signing of the summer. His arrival follows the acquisitions of Cristhian Mosquera (£13m), Martin Zubimendi (£60m),
Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5m), Christian Norgaard (£10m), and Noni Madueke (£48.5m), pushing Arsenal’s total summer spending to around £200 million. Confirming the move, Arsenal posted on X, “This is where you need to be. Viktor Gyokeres is a Gunner.”
Gyokeres is expected to join Arsenal’s pre-season tour in Singapore and Hong Kong, where they will face Newcastle on Sunday and Tottenham on July 31. After struggling with striker injuries last season, particularly to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz, Arsenal were desperate for a consistent goal threat.
With Gyokeres’ proven scoring record of 97 goals in 102 appearances for Sporting, Arteta will be hoping the Swede can end Arsenal’s 20-year wait for a Premier League title. The club’s new sporting director, Andrea Berta, has acted swiftly this summer to strengthen a squad that has finished second in the Premier League for the past three seasons.
Promising young talents Gabriel and Myles Lewis-Skelly have also signed new contracts, with Ethan Nwaneri expected to follow soon.
