Two officers of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps, have been arrested for allegedly stealing cocoa beans in Idanre Local Government Area.
The suspects, identified as Ajayi Adebusuyi (45) and Oluwadare Olubodun (42), were reportedly caught during a routine inspection at a cocoa farm near Gbalegi Camp in Idanre.
According to reports, the farm’s caretaker, Friday Abbah, had been monitoring the property following repeated incidents of cocoa theft. His vigilance led to the operatives’ arrest. Cocoa pods suspected to have been stolen were recovered as exhibits.
A resident, identified simply as Abel, said the suspects were immediately handed over to the Nigeria Police Force divisional headquarters in Idanre.
Confirming the development, the spokesman of the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said the arrest came after a series of complaints by farm managers in the area. He explained that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
“The security operatives visited the farmland at Gbalegi Camp and discovered several empty cocoa pods. We have the two men in custody, and the case has been ordered to be transferred to the SCID for further investigation,” Ayanlade stated.
The incident has stirred concern in Idanre, a community renowned for cocoa production, with many residents expressing shock over the alleged involvement of security officers in the very crimes they were deployed to curb.
